Proficient
Introduction provides a thesis that is poorly worded or conceived. The body paragraphs are lacking in topic sentences or focus. The final paragraph relates to the ideas presented in essay. and suggests what the reader should take away from the topic.
Limited
The introduction lacks a thesis; the paragraphs do not all remain focused on the topic, or are not all broken down into logical separate topcis. The conclusion does not add anything to the essay or demosntrate what the reader should take away from the topic.
Unsatisfactory
Introduction does not specify purpose of essay; paragraphs do not adhere to one clear topic; there is no conclusion.

Essay shows perceptiveness and/or creativity in developing the argument with evidence that persuasively supports the thesis, relates to the topic, and appears in logical order.
Proficient
Essay shows some perceptiveness, and/or creativity, and clarity in focusing on the topic. Evidence supports the thesis, relates to the topic, and is for the most part logically ordered.
Limited
Essay shows very limited perceptiveness, and/or creativity. The essay does not effectively use evidence; or information is unclear or unrelated to the topic; or there is no logical order.
Unsatisfactory
Essay lacks perceptiveness, and creativity; there is a lack of clarity. There is no support for evidence provided; information is unclear or unrelated to the topic; there is no logical order.

Exemplary
Free of grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation errors. Vivid words used placed effectively and accurately.
Proficient
Very few grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, containing only several minor mistakes. Some vivid word choice, mostly placed appropriately.
Limited
The essay has many grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, including several major ones. Poor/simplistic word choice with misused terms.
Unsatisfactory
The essay is replete with major and minor grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors that distract the reader from the content. Simplistic word choice and/or incorrect word usage.
Sources
Exemplary
Ability to accurately summarize and/or quote outside sources with an understanding of the relevance of the source and how it applies to the student's essay. MLA format is followed correctly and throughout.
Proficient
Ability to summarize and quote sources, but not all sources are used accurately or are clearly relevant. MLA format is mostly accurate and followed throughout most of essay.
Limited
Summarizes and quotes sources, but the relevance of the source to the topic is unclear. When applicable MLA format is used sporadically throughout the essay.

The essay contains inappropriate, and unclear, sense of readership. The essay contains inappropriate, and unclear, sense of readership.
