topic sentence

this sentence must state the central theme of the paragraph. It contains both a subject and an opinion about that subject (also called commentary).

Beginning

I am at the beginning stage of writing topic sentences. I don't really know how to do this yet.
Developing

I know what a topic sentence is and that it occurs at the beginning of the paragraph; however, sometimes it's hard for me to think of one.
Proficient

I can write a topic sentence that very clearly states the central theme of my paragraph.
details

these sentences comprise the bulk of the paragraph. They are the facts, specifics, proof, evidence, commentary, opinion, insight, etc. on the subject.

Beginning

I have a few details to create a paragraph.
Developing

I include some important details in my paragraph.
Proficient

My paragraph is full of very specific details about my topic sentence. I also include commentary to compliment my facts, details, specifics, or examples.
clincher

this sentence must repeat or reflect 2 - 3 key words of the topic sentence.

Beginning

I'm not sure what this is yet.
Developing

I know what it is but I sometimes have trouble writing one that accurately repeats or reflects 2-3 key words of my topic sentence.
Proficient

My clincher accurately repeats or reflects 2-3 key words of my topic sentence. It's obvious that I worked hard to make it an excellent end to my paragraph.
