Iconic Expectations 
After analyzing covers of current indie reads, students will create icons representing their expectations of the novel. The icon will also include their expectations of and anticipations for the novel, and the author's purpose for writing the novel.

Icon Construction

The icon is neat, creative, and reflects the student's expectations of the novel. The student has written his/her expectations, anticipations, and the author's purpose on the icon. The author and title of the book also appear on the front of the icon.

Poor

The icon does not reflect the student's expectations of the novel (as stated on the icon). The workmanship is sloppy or the writing is illegible. The icon is missing two or more of the required elements--OR the elements included are not the appropriate length.
Fair

The icon reflects the student's expectations of the novel (as stated on the icon). The workmanship is neat and the writing is legible. The icon may be missing one of the required elements--OR--the elements included are not the appropriate length.
Good

The icon reflects the student's expectations of the novel (as stated on the icon). The workmanship is outstanding, and the writing is legible. All of the required elements are present and are the appropriate length.
Author's Purpose

This should be an inference made after an analysis of the elements present in the cover art.

Poor

The author's purpose is missing from the icon--OR--the paragraph does not address the author's purpose --OR--no attempt has been made to answer the question, "Why do you think the author wrote this book?"
Fair

An attempt has been made to answer the question, "Why do you think the author wrote this book?" BUT the response is less than a paragraph long--OR--the response lacks depth (the "I think the author wrote this book to entertain readers, but I really don't know" response).
Good

The author's purpose is present on the icon, meets or exceeds the length requirements, and clearly answers the question, "Why do you think the author wrote this book?".
Grammar and Mechanics

The student should follow the conventions of grammar, spelling, and mechanics.

Poor

There are more than five errors in grammar and mechanics.
Fair

There are 3-4 errors in grammar and mechanics.
Good

There are fewer than three errors in grammar and mechanics.
Anticipations

Answers the question: What are you most looking forward to about reading this book?"

Poor

The reader's anticipations are missing from the icon--OR--no attempt has been made to answer the question "What are you most looking forward to about reading this book?"
Fair

An attempt has been made to answer the question "What are you most looking forward to about reading this book?" However, the response does not meet the length requirement--OR--the response lacks depth ( the "I am looking forward to finishing the book so that I can finish my assignment" response).
Good

The question"What are you most looking forward to about reading this book?" has been answered. The response is an honest, thoughtful explanation. The response meets or exceeds the length requirement.
Expectations

Response should answer the question, "What do you expect to get out of this book?"

Poor

The reader's expectations are missing from the icon--OR--no attempt has been made to answer the question, "What do you expect to learn as a result of reading this book?"
Fair
