Register/playable	Poor Notes chosen are not in the register of the instrument.	Fair Generally half of the notes chosen are not in the register of the instrument.	Good All the notes chosen are in the instrument's register, but the student is unable to play them.	Excellent All the notes are in the instrument's register and are playable by the student.
Time signature	Poor The time signature does not match the measures.	Fair The time signature does not match half of the measures.	Good The time signature matches the measures, but rhythm does not flow easily and musically.	Excellent The time signature is appropriate for the measures and the rhythm flows musically through out the piece.
Key signature	Poor The key signature does not match the intended key.	Fair Over half of the notes do not match the intended key signature.	Good The key signature is logical however some of the notes used are not in the correct key.	Excellent The key signature is logical and the notes are all in the correct key.
Effort/Creativity	Poor Student was very distracted during the entire composition unit. Student was not on task and the work does not reflect creativity.	Fair Student was somewhat distracted during the composition unit and their work has minimal creativity reflected in their work.	Good Student was able to maintain focus and stay on task for the majority of the composition unit. Their work is creative.	Excellent Student was on task and worked diligently throughout the entire composition unit. Their work is extremely creative, showing great thought went into this composition
