Details & Descriptive Writing Rubric Details & Descriptive Writing Rubric Students will complete a descriptive writing prompt using their five senses to create a descriptive essay. Main Idea & Details	Excellent The topic sentence is clearly stated with a defined subject/details while remaining on topic.	Good The essay has a clearly defined subject/topic sentence with details and remains somewhat on topic	Needs Improvement The essay has a vaguely defined subject/topic sentence with details and gets off the topic.	Unsatifactory The essay does not contain a main idea or topic sentence with related details.
Mechanics and Spelling	Excellent The passage is free of grammar and/or spelling errors.	Good The passage contains 1 or 2 grammar and/or spelling errors.	Needs Improvement The passage contains 3 or 4 grammar and/or spelling errors.	Unsatifactory The passage contains 5 or more grammar and/or spelling errors.
Capitalization & Punctuation	Excellent The passage is free of capitalization & punctuation errors.	Good The passage has 1 or 2 capitalization & punctuation errors.	Needs Improvement The passage has 3 or 4 more capitalization & punctuation errors.	Unsatifactory The passage has 5 or more capitalization & punctuation errors.
