Quality of Sources
Representativeness
2 pts

Is the bibliography representative of the literature?

Unacceptable

Good

Draws from multiple journals but no books, or otherwise gives the impression of an overly narrow search.
Excellent

Draws from diverse kinds of sources, but they are skewed towards some kinds or otherwise not entirely representative.
Superior

Uses a diverse set of sources, including both books and journal articles, so as to make the bibliography representative of the wider literature on the subject.
Nature of Sources
2 pts

Does the bibliography draw mainly from high-quality, scientific sources?

Unacceptable

Less than 50% from scientific and scholarly sources.

Less than 80% from scientific and scholarly sources.

Unacceptable

Missing all, or almost all, important sources related to the topic.
Good

Although missing sources that might be deemed classics in the literature, includes other sources that reference the classics or otherwise cover similar material and findings.
Excellent

Has some of the most important sources, but also has some glaring omissions.
Superior

Includes the most important sources related to the topic.
Relation to Topic
Relevance
2 pts

How well does the bibliography relate to the research topic?

Unacceptable

Sources are more of a random collection than a relevant, focused body of literature.
Good

Some sources relate to the topic but other seem off-base, so that half of the sources or fewer have a clear relationship to the topic.
Excellent

Sources are mostly related to the topic, although some may be off-base.
Superior

Sources are related to the topic and represent a clear and legitimate focus.
