Fantasy Lands - 3rd Grade
Visual Art - Texture
The students will use their creativity to design a fantasy landscape using a fore, middle, and back ground and objects to scale. They will make a crayon resist by adding textures with crayon and color with watercolor paints. The art standards for this project are S1B1 Manipulate elements and principles of art to express a mood or idea and S1B2 Create sketches for artwork

Fore, middle, and backgrounds
Level 1
The landscape is drawn on one level only.
Level 2
The landscape is drawn with a fore and background but no middle is visible.

The landscape is clearly drawn with fore, middle and background.
Level 4
The landscape is clearly drawn with fore, middle and backgrounds. Detail has also been given to item scale with large objects in the front and smaller in the back.
Adding textures
Level 1
No textures were used.
Level 2
One to two textures were used.
Level 3
Many textures were made. But sometimes not knowing what texture to make the student scribbled or made the texture too light.
Level 4
Many thought out textures were made. The student had a good understanding of what textures to make and how clear and dark to make them.
Watercolors
Level 1
Either all light or dark values were used.
Level 2
Mostly dark values were used with no evidence of dark in the foreground and light in the back ground.
Level 3
Good use of dark values in the front and light in the back on objects and land, but sky was painted too dark.
Level 4
Good use of dark values in the front and light in the back on objects, land, and sky.
Sketches
Level 1
No preliminary sketches were made. Student had difficulty coming up with own ideas.
Level 2
Only one sketch was completed.
Level 3
Student made two sketches and chose which one he/she liked the best.
Level 4
Student made multiple sketches and chose which one he/she liked the best.
Uses elements and principle
Level 1
Student has difficulty expressing mood or idea and needs teacher direction to complete his/her art work.
Level 2
Student has difficulty expressing mood or idea, but once teacher has helped with direction, he/she is able to complete on own.
Level 3
Student is intuitively able to use the elements and principles of design to express his/her mood or idea and only asks for teacher's assistance when needed.
Level 4
Student is independently able to express his/her mood or idea with no assistance and is aware of elements and principles used in art work.
