Subject: Engineering
Type: Assessment
Grade Levels: Undergraduate

There are many test that an engineer may perform that do not require all of the Criteria. As an example, consider factorial testing to determine what variable(s) is critical to a design. For some exploratory issues, hypothesis testing is not the issue.

Purpose of Testing

Unacceptable

No understanding of the problem is indicated
Developing

A need for the testing is grasped.
Accomplished

___________________
Exemplary

A clear, valid statement of the purpose for the testing is given
Statement of Expected Performance

(Hypothesis)

Unacceptable

None provided
Developing

The variable(s) to be tested are given, but no quantitative values are provided
Accomplished

The variable(s) to be tested are stated and quantitative expressed, but are not complete.
Exemplary

The variable(s) to be tested are given, and quantitatively expressed. A null hypothesis, if used, is fully stated.
Experiment Deisgn

Unacceptable

The experiment will not solve the problem
Developing

An attempt has been made to evaluate issues, but due to items such as inadequate sampling, the results are not likely to provide an adequate solution
Accomplished

The design attempts to solve the problem but there is a chance the data will not lead to an accurate solution. Variation of data is taken into account
Exemplary

The design solves the problem and has a high likelihood of producing data that will lead to a reliable solution. Variation is considered adequately
Test Set Up

Unacceptable

Not provided
Developing

A sketch is given, but lacks detailed information on instruments used
Accomplished

A clear drawing is provide, but some detail is lacking
Exemplary

A drawing of the test set up is provided with full annotation of instruments used and connectivity between and among them shown.
Presentation of Data

Unacceptable

None existent, or totally not useful to a reader
Developing

Data appears in a rushed thoughtless way, but could be of some use to a reader. Data may be incomplete.
Accomplished

Data provided is complete, but not necessarily in the most useful formant
Exemplary

Presentation of data is orderly, complete, and allows an independent investigator to verify results
Analysis of Data

(Hypothesis Accept/Reject)

Unacceptable

Analysis is non-existent or in gross error.
Developing

Analysis conducted is incomplete, or not fully interpreted
Accomplished

Analysis conducted is complete, but interpretation is not complete or fully accurate.
Exemplary
