B Proficient
Makes detailed responses for the most part. Thoroughly addresses most of the prompts in each category but one section may need improvement. Uses a variety of specific supporting examples from the poem that reflect orginal thinking and substantial insight and understanding.
C Satisfactory
Makes a response to all prompts but responses to the poem reflect a predominately literal sense of the poem, although attempts have been made to discuss deeper aspects of the poem. Uses mostly general support with a few specific examples of supporting text.
D Deficient
Responses are not detailed or complete although some attempt has been made. Discussion stays on the surface of ideas or contains mostly literal discussion.
Organization

Responses are highly organized and flow smoothly throughout all elements.
B Proficient
Responses are organized and flow smoothly except in a few places which may seem out of place or awkward. Author clearly put thought into organization.
C Satisfactory
The organization needs smoother flow in more than one element. A few parts are confusing in places and overall effect lacks smoothness.
Conclusion may be weak.
D Deficient
The organization makes the responses hard to follow at times. Conclusion may be vague or missing.

Responses contain few to no errors in standard grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Any non-standard usage is intentional and effective.
B Proficient
Responses contain a few errors in standard grammar, punctuation, and/or spelling, but errors do not distract from the work as a whole.
C Satisfactory
Responses contain several errors in standard grammar and punctuation and/or spelling, but the responses are understandable and not significantly compromised by errors.
D Deficient
Responses contain many errors. The amount and/or type of errors greatly distract the reader and make the ideas difficult to understand.
Voice

Responses contain a distinct and engaging voice. Strong awareness of audience and purpose. Diction is skillful and sentence structure promotes rhythmic flow of ideas.
B Proficient
Responses contain a distinct and interesting voice. Writing reflects an awareness of audience and purpose. Diction shows skill in use. Sentence structure promotes and rhythmic flow of ideas for most of the response, although a few areas need improvement.
C Satisfactory
Responses contain some sense of a distinct voice but it is inconsistent. Phrasing may not be effective in parts. Some sentence variety. Aware of audience and purpose.
D Deficient
Responses contain little or no distinct voice. Phrasing is repetitive or awkward. Little sentence variety. Awareness of audience may be limited.
