Comprehension	Missing The political cartoon is not present or it is indistinguishable as a political cartoon.	Unsatisfactory Student has very little understanding about the topic. Their message is not clear or does not make sense. Graphics are sloppy.	Satisfactory Student somewhat understands the topic and conflicts of the event. Their purpose and critique is clear but weak. Graphics and text are weak.	Distinguished Student clearly understands the historical event and the critique in the cartoon is evident. They make a strong statement using appropriate graphics and text.
Content	Missing Content is completely unrelated to the chosen topic, or there is not cartoon.	Unsatisfactory Student made up the cartoon without any factual basis and/or no political cartoon element is present. Did not seem to consciously use any of the elements for political cartoons discussed in class.	Satisfactory Student used opinions or feelings about the issue rather than actual information for the basis of their cartoon and hinted toward a political cartoon element. Used at least one of the elements discussed in class.	Distinguished Student used actual information found during research and observation and included at least 2 of the political elements discussed in class.
Originality	Missing Plagiarized work, or not cartoon present.	Unsatisfactory Uses other people's ideas (giving them credit), but there is little evidence of original thinking.	Satisfactory Product shows some original thought. Work shows new ideas and insights.	Distinguished Product shows a large amount of original thought. Ideas are creative and inventive.
Grammar	Missing Grammar and spelling mistakes make the cartoon incomprehensible, or there is no political cartoon.	Unsatisfactory Four misspellings and/or grammatical errors.	Satisfactory Three or fewer misspellings and/or mechanical errors.	Distinguished No misspellings or grammatical errors.
