Piano Performance Final Exam 
In addition to the written portion, Students will perform a selected piece(s) independently or as a duet in order to demonstrate the proper technique, posture, correct rhythm, pitch, and tempo. Students must also apply an accumulated knowledge of musical notation, symbols, and terminology in order to perform the assigned piece accurately and correctly.

Steady Tempo, Beat, and Rhythm

Minimal Achievement

Student does not understand the concept of steady beat and rhythm. There are many examples of inaccurate pulse and rhythm. Technical passages are weak. Tempo fluctuates, and there may be abrupt stops.
Satisfactory

Student plays some of the selection with a lack of consistently correct pulses and rhythm. Student may rush or slow technically difficult passages. Tempo may fluctuate.
High Achievement

Student plays selection with infrequent errors in pulse and rhythms. Tempo does not fluctuate.
Excellent

Student plays selection with consistently correct pulse and rhythm throughout the ENTIRE performance. Tempo does not fluctuate.
Pitch

Minimal Achievement

Student does not understand the concept of pitch, there are many inaccurate notes and fingerings.
Satisfactory

Student demonstrates a satisfactory knowledge of pitch, with a lack of consistently correct notes and fingerings.
High Achievement

Student demonstrates a good knowledge of pitch with infrequent errors in notes and fingering. A few minor technical problems.
Excellent

Student demonstrates an excellent knowledge of pitch by performing with consistently correct notes and fingerings throughout the entire performance.
Overall Proficiency

Music Terminology, Phrasing, and Musicianship.

Minimal Achievement

Student demonstrates no knowledge of music terminology (dynamics, tempo marking, etc.) and phrasing while performing, and there is little to none of a display of musicianship.
Satisfactory

Student demonstrates some knowledge of music terminology (dynamics, tempo marking, etc.) and phrasing while performing, and there is some evidence of musicianship.
High Achievement

Student demonstrates a proper knowledge of music terminology (dynamics, tempo marking, etc.) and phrasing while performing, and a good effort of musicianship is shown.
Excellent

Student demonstrates an excellent knowledge of music terminology (dynamics, tempo marking, etc.) and phrasing while performing, and has an excellent display of musicianship.
Preparation

Effort and practice

Minimal Achievement

Student has shown little or no effort to practice music, and is sight reading the selected piece.
Satisfactory

Student has shown some effort in practicing, and has a satisfactory preparation of the piece.
High Achievement

Student has practiced effectively most of the time with a good effort, and shows a good knowledge and preparation of the piece.
Excellent

Student has effectively used all class time showing excellent and consistent effort inside or outside of class. The selected piece is prepared extremely well and may be memorized.
