Middle School Music Theory 
An understanding of basic music theory in regard to notes, note names, rhythms, key signature, time signatures and scales. The student must have a full understanding of the building blocks of theory before moving to the next grade level of instrumental music education.

The student has no knowledge of note letters or can identify the letters of a staff.

The student can identify three note letters on a staff from their instrument and demonstrate the ability to write those notes.

The student has a great knowledge of all note letters with minimal mistakes not to exceed three per performance.

The student has a full mastery of all note letters including natural, sharps and flats.

The student has no knowledge of rhythm or time.

The student is able to count, tap, clap a rhythm of whole, half and quarter note value.

The student has a great knowledge of count, tap, clap with minimal mistakes not to exceed five per performance.
Proficient

The student has a great knowledge of count, tap, clap with minimal mistakes not to exceed three per performance.
Advanced

The student has a full mastery of count, tap, clap rhythm of complex time.
Key Signatrue

Poor

The student has no knowledge of key signature.
Fair

The student is able to identify where the key signature is located on the staff in any given composition.
Good

The student has a great knowledge of all key signatures with minimal mistakes not to exceed three per performance.
Proficient

The student has a great knowledge of all key signatures with minimal mistakes not to exceed one per performance.
Advanced

The student has a full mastery of all major key signatures.
Time Signature

Poor

The student has no knowledge of time signature.
Fair

The student is able to identify where the time signature is located on the staff in any given composition.
Good

The student has a great knowledge of all time signatures with minimal mistakes not to exceed three per performance.
Proficient

The student has a great knowledge of all time signatures with minimal mistakes not to exceed one per performance.
Advanced

The student has a full mastery of all major time signatures.
Scales

Poor

The student has no knowledge of scales.
Fair

The student is able to identify how many notes are in a major scale.
Good

The student has a great knowledge of all scales with minimal mistakes not to exceed five per performance.
Proficient

The student has a great knowledge of all scales with minimal mistakes not to exceed three per performance.
Advanced

The student has a full mastery and performance of all major scales including one chromatic.
