ASL Expressive Rubric 
Students will sign a story on a specific topic and keep in mind the following scoring criteria. They must not look at their story while signing it. They are encouraged to use their own smartphones to videotape it for analysis.

Semantic elements are correct for 50% of the presentation.

Semantic elements are used correctly during 75% of the presentation.

Semantic elements are used correctly for most or all of the presentation.
ASL Grammar

Weak

Signer makes many errors in grammar that distort content meaning.
Fair

Errors that distract from the meaning are made 75% of the time.
Good

Errors that distract from the meaning are made 50% of the time.
Very Good

A few errors that distract from the meaning are made.
Excellent

No errors that distract from the meaning are made.
Non-Manual Markers (NMM)

Weak

Uses no NMM (facial grammar, body language).
Fair

Uses incorrectly and/or inappropriately *OR* no NMM is used in most of the presentation.
Good

Uses correct NMM for 50% of the presentation.
Very Good

Uses correct NMM for 75% of the presentation.
Excellent

Uses correct, appropriate NMM consistently.
Story Clarity

Weak

Confusing, obviously not prepared.
Fair

Somewhat confusing, but main point can be understood.
Good

About 50% clear and organized; some preparation evident.
Very Good

About 75% clear and easily understood; adequate preparation.
Excellent

Easily understood; has clear beginning, middle, and end. Preparation obvious.
