D=Below Average

SUPPORT FOR POSITION
A=Excellent
Includes 2 or more pieces of evidence that support the position statement and all are specific, relevant and show how each piece of evidence supports the author's position.
B=Above Average
Includes 1 to 2 pieces of evidence that support the position statement and most are specific, relevant and show how each piece of evidence supports the author's position.

REFUTATION
A=Excellent
Opposing argument is identified and clear. Refutation is very clear and concise in refuting opponent's POV.
B=Above Average
Opposing argument is identified and clear. Refutation is moderately clear and concise in refuting opponent's POV.
C=Average (Satisfactory)
Opposing argument is identified, but unclear. Refutation is weak and general in refuting opponent's POV.
D=Below Average
Refutation is not recognizable or non-existent.
SEQUENCING
A=Excellent
Arguments and support are provided in a logical order that makes it easy and interesting to follow the author's train of thought.
B=Above Average
Arguments and support are provided in a fairly logical order that makes it reasonably easy to follow the author's train of thought.
C=Average (Satisfactory)
A few of the support details or arguments are not in an expected or logical order, distracting the reader and making the essay seem a little confusing.
D=Below Average
Many of the support details or arguments are not in an expected or logical order, distracting the reader and making the essay seem very confusing.
CONCLUSION
A=Excellent
The conclusion is strong and leaves the reader solidly understanding the writer's position. Effective restatement of the position statement begins the closing paragraph.
B=Above Average
The conclusion is recognizable. The author's position is restated within the first two sentences of the closing paragraph.
C=Average (Satisfactory)
The author's position is restated within the closing paragraph, but not near the beginning.
D=Below Average
There is no conclusion - the paper just ends.
VOICE

The author seems to be writing from knowledge or experience. The author has taken the ideas and made them "his own."
B=Above Average
The author seems to be drawing on knowledge or experience, but there is some lack of ownership of the topic.
C=Average (Satisfactory)
The author relates some of his own knowledge or experience, but it adds nothing to the discussion of the topic.
D=Below Average
The author has not tried to transform the information in a personal way. The ideas and the way they are expressed seem to belong to someone else.
GRAMMAR & SPELLING
A=Excellent
The author makes no errors in grammar or spelling that distract the reader from the content.
B=Above Average
The author makes 1-2 errors in grammar or spelling that distract the reader from the content.
C=Average (Satisfactory)
The author makes 3-4 errors in grammar or spelling that distract the reader from the content.
D=Below Average
The author makes more than 4 errors in grammar or spelling that distract the reader from the content.
WORKS CITED PAGE
A=Excellent
Follows all MLA rules for Works Cited list with no errors in citation format.
B=Above Average
Follows most MLA rules for Work Cited list with one or two errors in citation format.
C=Average (Satisfactory)
Follows some MLA rules for Work Cited list with more then two errors in citation format.
D=Below Average
Missing Works Cited list.
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS
