Main Idea

Is prompt restated into a topic sentence?

Basic

Main idea/Topic Sentence is not present or is unclear.
You did not write a clear introduction, if any.
You may have stated your point of view, but did not give the reader a reason to keep reading.
Partially Proficient

Main Idea/Topic Sentence is present but does not restate the topic.
The reader knows your point of view. You stated your position, but your introduction does not really grab the reader's attention.
Proficient

Main Idea/Topic Sentence is present and clearly written.
You got the reader's attention.
You presented your point of view on your topic.
You gave the reader a reason to keep on reading.
Advanced

The Main Idea/Topic Sentence is a clear restating of the topic.
You DEFINITELY got the reader's attention.
You presented your point of view on your topic.
You gave the reader a good reason to keep on reading by using a hook.
Supporting details

Does each detail support, or tell more about the topic?

Basic

The details do not support the main idea.
Your arguments and/or examples are not very convincing.
Partially Proficient

Some of the details support the main idea, but there are some that do not.
You have 2-3 arguments but DO NOT really give facts or clear commentaries to support your position.
Proficient

Each detail supports the main idea but there are no follow up sentences.
You have three satisfactory factual arguments and give satisfactory commentaries.
Advanced

Each detail supports, or tells more about the topic. Follow up sentences provide additional support.
You have three convincing and factual arguments with clear commentaries. Used transitional words such as First, Second, in addition to, etc.

Logical order

Does the order of the supporting details make sense ?

Basic

The supporting sentences within the paragraph as a whole are not developed in a logical order.
Partially Proficient

The writer attempts to develop the sentences in a logical order, but some of the paragraph may be presented in an order readers may find confusing.
Proficient

Most of the sentences are presented in a logical order, and readers should have little trouble following the supporting details.
Advanced

The sentences are developed in a logical order appropriate to the writer's purpose and readers needs.
Conclusion

Does the conclusion restate the topic in a new way to tie the details together?

Basic

There is no conclusion. The paragraph just ends without summing up, or restating the topic. It doesn't tie the the details together.
Partially Proficient

There is an attempt at a conclusion, but it doesn't restate the topic, or tie the details together.
Proficient

The conclusion sums up the topic, by restating it, but it does tie the details together.
Advanced

The conclusions does an excellent job of summing up, or restating the topic and tieing the details together.
Grammar and Mechanics

Does the paper indicate that the writer has control of the rules of spelling, grammar and mechanics

Basic

The paragraph contains 6 or more errors in usage, spelling and mechanics most of which are distracting to the reader.
Partially Proficient

The paragraph contains 3 to 5 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics, some of which are distracting to the reader.
Proficient

The paragraph contains 1 or 2 errors in usage, spelling and mechanics, but they are not distracting to the reader.
Advanced

The paragraph contains no more than two errors. There is nothing in the spelling, usage or mechanics that is distracting to the reader.
