Sound Quality
Good
Qualiaty of sound is inconsistant. Sticks routinely hit the wrong part of the drum or mallets strike the posts on keyboard instruments.
Excellent
Sometimes drifts from center of sound on instruments. Hands move from correct location occasionally.
Superior
Performs with good technique and hand action. Always strikes instruments in correct location.
Hand Coordination
Good
Left and right hands do not duplicate each other on a regular basis. Fatigue is often eveident in the weaker hand.
Excellent
Left and right hands do not produce the same sound. Some pulsing in long rolls and inconsistnat dynamic control of mallet instrument.
Superior
Left and right hands are equally proficient in roll technique and scale patterns. Sound quality is equal from hand to hand.
Rhythmic Accuracy
Good
Simple quarter and half note rhythms are accomplished. Multiple eighth note and rest patterns and pulse control are inconsistant or lacking in performance.
Excellent
Complex eighth, sixteenth, dotted, and syncopated rhythms are not easily achieved. Some inconsistancies in keeping a steady beat and pulse control.
Superior
Demonstrates an advanced understanding of rhythmic stability. Able to play complex rhythms with almost complete mastery.
Musicality
Good
Performances shows attention only to note values with little consideration of expression, volume, tempo changes, and phrases.
Excellent
Performance shows limited attention to phrases and dynamics. Entrances are often not balanced with the wind section of the band.
Superior
Expressive qualities of the music are observed most of the time. Phrases are recognized and dynamic changes are consistantly observed.
Preparation
Good
Performance does not evidence much outside of class preparation. Often is not prepared for rehearsal.
Excellent
Performance shows some progress in music performance but does not quickly demonstrat a commplete familiarity of the music. Occasionally is not prepared for rehearsal.
Superior
Performance shows evidence of practice at home and complete preparation for the next rehersal. Music is quickly learned. Always prepared for rehearsal.
