Paragraph contains an attention getter and gives a brief overview of the main idea; thesis is present but a bit unclear or located within the paragraph; is at least 4 sentences long; uses some informal English
Beginning
Paragraph does not give an overview of the topic or thesis is worded awkwardly; intro is less than 4 sentences long; sounds very informal and too conversational; attention getter is satisfactory
Incomplete
Paragraph is too short and does not give a clear indication of the topic; thesis is missing and paragraph does not contain an attention getter
3 Body Paragraphs

Paragraphs are easy to follow (ideas follow thesis); give topic sentences and strong supporting details; are well developed; have smooth transitions; arguments are developed.

Paragraphs are somewhat easy to follow; topic sentences and general supporting details are present; transitions are used but some could be stronger; ideas are developed.
Beginning
Paragraphs contain minimal support and summarize, rather than give specifics; some topic sentences do not state the main idea; some transitions are present but could be improved
Incomplete
There are not 3 body paragraphs. Sentences are not clear, and the body paragraphs contain little or no support for the thesis.
