Fair

Paper meets the basic requirements but might be lacking quality sources. Essay might be 1/4 below the required lenght. Fails to include a properly formated works cited page.
Good

Paper meets at a solid level of competency the basic requirements of the paper.
Excellent

Essay exceeds the basic requirements. Adds additional resources; adds insight and creativity to the topic. Unique approach that is well-executed.
Thesis/Focus/Content

Needs Improvement

Lacks a clear thesis or focus. Fails to make an argument or states the obvious.

Restates ideas found in the essay or essay prompt. Adds no new thoughts, insights, or feelings to the subject.
Fair

May have focus, but lacks a clear statement of thesis/argument.
Argument is occasionally forgotten or abandoned, or have a split thesis.

The essay feels fairly well-executed but boring and uninteresting. Vagueness and repetition are often two problems here.
