Letter to the Editor adopting historical perspective
As a Canadian soldier fighting on the front line, students write a letter home to a loved one describing life in the trenches.

The writer makes little attempt to create a personal story, with only 1-2 details about life in the trenches.
Good - Level 3
The writer adopts a personal story that has at least 5 specific details mentioned about life in the trenches (weapons, locations, people, daily life, battle)
Excellent - Level 4
The writer creates a personal story that includes 8 different facts from WW1 (details about specific location, a known WW1 figure, specific date, trench life, two different weapons, a battle name). Facts are historically accurate and detailed. A top mark will be given for students that go beyond the 8 facts).

The letter has many mistakes in spelling and puctuation. There are 3-4 incomplete sentences.
Good - Level 3
The letter contains some errors in spelling and puctuation. Student missed corrections that were pointed out by teacher or EA. Most sentences are complete.
Excellent - Level 4
The letter contains proper punctuation and spelling. There are full, correct sentences. Student was able to make all corrections independently.

Fair - Level 2
Letter had little or no natural flow. Feelings, opinions or ideas were not always evident, nor was personal tone.
Good - Level 3
Student's writing gave a somewhat realistic portrayal of a soldier's thoughts, feelings and opinions. The letter had some flow but there were moments when it seemed information was simply "jammed in" .
Excellent - Level 4
Letter has a distinctly personal tone. Student writing clearly portrayed feelings and opinions of their character / soldier. Reader had no problem picking up the intended tone of the writer. Information, events, feelings, etc. Have a natural flow / tone.
