The purpose of this rubric is to describe appropriate classroom behaviors and enable students to understand what is expected of them as members of the class.

Exemplary

Attends all classes on time and stays for entire class.
Acceptable

Misses 2X or less with valid reason, contacts office or instructor before missing class and attempts to get homework. Arrives late or leaves early 2X or less with valid reason.
Unacceptable

Misses classes more than 2X without valid reason, does not call or attempt to get homework when class is missed. Arrives late or leaves early more than 2X without valid reason.
Homework

Exemplary

All homework assignments are completed on time and show that the student completed them to the best of his/her ability.
Acceptable

Completes all but 1 or 2 homework assignments, but does make an attempt to complete assignment. Homework is submitted on time and is completed to the best of his/her ability.
Unacceptable

Homework is not completed when due, homework is not completed more than 2x, does not bring homework to class, homework is incomplete or of poor quality.
Class participation

Exemplary

Student contributes to all class discussions, gives meaningful feedback, stays on task, pays attention in class.
Acceptable

Student contributes to most class discussions, gives meaningful feedback, stays on task, pays attention in class.
Unacceptable

Student does not contribute to class discussions, does not give meaningful feedback, sleeps in class or focuses on activities unrelated to class, takes excessive breaks.
Attitude About Learning

Exemplary

Student has clear reasons for taking the class for self-improvement, with an awareness of own needs; participates in all activities to the best of his/her ability.
Acceptable

Student may question certain activities searching for clarity, student respects instructor's choice of activities.
Unacceptable

Student complains about class activities, homework, etc., student challenges instructor about the need for activities, journals, homework, etc.
Respectfulness

Exemplary

Student is polite and respectful to classmates and instructor, does not interrupt when others are talking, uses appropriate language, does not damage materials, classroom, or furnishings.
Acceptable

Listens while others are talking, attends to class activities, uses appropriate language, does not damage materials, classroom, or furnishings.
Unacceptable

Student is distracting to others, ignores instructor, uses inappropriate language and/or behaviors such as: harassment, ridicule, racism/sexism, interrupts others, threatens others, destoys property.
