	Not Proficient 1 pts	Approaching Proficiency 2 pts	Proficient 3 pts	High Proficiency 4 pts
Restate	Not Proficient The question is not restated. Response begins with "Because," "So," or "That."	Approaching Proficiency There is an attempt to restate, or the question is restated partially, but is not clear.	Proficient The questions is clearly restated in the response. The reader knows what to expect.	High Proficiency The question is clearly restated by the writer by paraphrasing the question.
Answer	Not Proficient There is no answer or the answer has nothing to do with the question.	Approaching Proficiency The answer is incomplete, or the writer does not show a clear understanding of how to proceed.	Proficient The question is answered fully, showing that the writer has a fair comprehension of what is being asked.	High Proficiency The question is answered fully, showing that the writer has complete comprehension of what is being asked.
Cite	Not Proficient The response does not provide textual evidence. No evidence based terms are included.	Approaching Proficiency Response includes limited textual evidence, or the evidence does not support the answer. No evidence based terms are included.	Proficient The response includes one piece of textual evidence, that are relevant to the question, and they fully support the answer.	High Proficiency The response includes two pieces of textual evidence that are are effective and convincing.
Explain	Not Proficient There is no attempt to support the evidence. There is no connection to the answer.	Approaching Proficiency The explanation attempts to supply reasoning and/or inferencing which supports the evidence. It does not connect to the answer.	Proficient The explanation supplies reasoning and/or inferencing which supports the evidence. But lacks connection to the answer.	High Proficiency The explanation supplies effective reasoning which connects to the answer.
Summarizing	Not Proficient There is no summarizing sentence.	Approaching Proficiency There is an attempt to sum up the question but summation is not clear or has little to do with the prompt, or is missing a connection to the answer.	Proficient The questions is summed up almost completely but is not clear, or missing some connection to the answer.	High Proficiency The paragraph is summed up by restating the question through paraphrase.
