Thesis Statement

Excellent Competency = A

Develops fresh and original insight that challenges the reader's thinking. Demonstrates a strong debatable claim with specific supporting reasons
Strong Competency = B

Thesis is somewhat original and offers insight to the reader. Debatable claim and supporting reasons are mostly effective.
Average Competency = C

Thesis may be obvious or unimaginative. Thesis contains a list. Debatable claim needs to be more assertive. Supporting reasons are somewhat generalized
Limited Competency = F

Thesis is difficult to identify. Reader cannot determine thesis and purpose or thesis is not related to the topic and writing assignment.
Failed to complete = 0

Thesis is omitted.
Organization

Excellent Competency = A

Completely and imaginatively supports thesis and purpose. Topic sentences linked to thesis statement. Sequence of ideas is very effective. Transitions are strongly effective.
Strong Competency = B

Organization clearly supports thesis and purpose. Topic sentences linked to thesis statements. Transitions are mostly appropriate.
Average Competency = C

Evidence of logical organization. One topic sentence does not link to thesis statement. A few abrupt shifts of ideas noted. overall flow of ideas in sentences is fairly competent.
Limited Competency = F

Unclear organization or organizational plan is inappropriate to thesis. Topic sentences, if found, do not link to thesis statement. Transitions are not used or are overly simplistic (next, next, next)

Support/ Reasoning

Excellent Competency = A

Substantial, logical, and concrete development of ideas and arguments. Assumptions are made explicit. Details are all relevant, original, and convincingly interpreted and/or argued.
Strong Competency = B

offers solid, but less original reasoning than an 'A' essay. Some assumptions are not always recognized or made explicit. Contains appropriate details or examples.
Average Competency = C

Offers somewhat obvious support that may be too broad in places. Details trend toward generalizations - not interpreted or sometimes repetitive.
Limited Competency = F

Offers simplistic, undeveloped, or obscure support for the ideas. Inappropriate or off-topic generalizations, faulty assumptions, and errors of fact are very noticeable.

Use of Sources & MLA

Excellent Competency = A

Uses sources to support, extend, and inform, but not substitute writer's own development of ideas. Combines material from a variety of sources, including personal analysis and arguments, and accurate citations to primary and secondary texts. Does not overuse quotes to texts. Consistently conforms to MLA style manual requirements.
Strong Competency = B

Uses sources to support, extend, and inform, but not substitute the writer's own development of ideas. Does not overuse quotes. Does not always conform to MLA documentation and formatting requirements.
Average Competency = C

Uses relevant sources, but lacks in variety of sources and/or the skillful combination of sources. Quotations and paraphrases may be too long and/or inconsistently referenced. There are few errors in MLA conventions for citing and formatting.
Limited Competency = F

Neglects important sources and citing to even primary texts. Overuse of quotations or paraphrasing to substitute writer's own ideas. MLA conventions and formatting contain many errors.
Failed to complete = 0

No use of sources. Overuse of quotes or paraphrases bordering on plagiarism. No adherence MLA guidelines.
Usage

Excellent Competency = A

Sentence level usage is virtually free of any grammar errors. Final draft demonstrates excellent revising and proofreading. Does not use first or second person.
Strong Competency = B

Only a few usage errors noted. A few "typos" and spelling errors noted that could be corrected through more careful editing and proofreading. Does not use first or second person.
Average Competency = C

Errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling are noticeable in several paragraphs. More attention to revising, editing, and proofreading required. May have one or two instances of first or second person.
Limited Competency = F

Numerous errors in sentence-level construction and usage occur throughout and compromise the clarity of the essay. Multiple uses of first or second person.
Failed to complete = 0

Grammatical errors make the text difficult to comprehend. Draft was clearly not revised or edited. First and second person used often.
