Structure

Excellent

NO EXPOSITION! The play opens in the middle of action, and there is some type of closure at the end. The entire play takes place in one scene. EVERY DETAIL MUST RELATE TO THE ACTION OF THE PLAY. You've got ten minutes—there's no time for anything extraneous or random. EVERY DETAIL must be relevant by THE END.
Good

The play does not open in the middle of action, the play takes place over several locations or times, or there are extraneous details.
Fair

The play is missing two of the previous elements.
Needs Work

The play is missing all three elements of structure for a ten-minute play.
Plot Development

Excellent

The PROTAGONIST HAS A JOURNEY. He or she ends up someplace radically different from where he or she began. BIG THINGS and LIFE-ALTERING EVENTS happen. The end is significantly different than the beginning. There is A POINT OF NO RETURN. Once the protagonist crosses the line, there is no turning back! THE CLIMAX IS WHERE A CHARACTER WINS OR LOSES!
Good

The PROTAGONIST does not have A clear JOURNEY, s/he does not experience a life change, or there is not a clear climax.
Fair

The play is missing two of the previous elements.
Needs Work

The play is missing all three elements of plot development for a ten-minute play.
Dialogue and Action

Excellent

CHARACTERS SPEAK TO GET WHAT THEY WANT. All characters have DESIRES, and the characters only speak to fulfill their desires. On other hand, DON’T WASTE TIME TALKING ABOUT ANYTHING YOU CAN SHOW. Images are more powerful than words! The dialogue is realistic and interesting (dialogue overlaps, cuts off, is rhythmic, sub-textual).
Good

CHARACTERS SPEAK for the sake of speaking instead of their desires, say things rather than doing them, or the dialogue is not realistic or believable.
Fair

The play is missing two of the previous elements.
Needs Work

The play is missing all three elements of dialogue and action for a ten-minute play.
Characters

Excellent

CHARACTERS are OFF-BALANCE IN SOME WAY. Real characters are excessive in some areas and deficient in others. This is what makes a character layered and interesting. Fears, interests, and personality are explored, and characters are unique. Each character has a clear voice uniquely their own. Each character has a reason to be in the scene.
Good

CHARACTERS are one-dimensional, are too similar to each other, or has no reason to be in the scene.
Fair

The play is missing two of the previous elements.
Needs Work

The play is missing all three elements of character for a ten-minute play.
Met Requirements

Excellent

Play runs 9-10 minutes, meets all the required formatting, and has no grammatical errors.
Good

Play is 9-10 pages long, meets most of the required formatting, and is mostly free of grammatical errors.
Fair

Play is 5-8 pages long, does not meet most of the required formatting, and is fraught with grammatical errors.
Needs Work

Play is 1-4 pages long, does not meet any of the required formatting, and grammatical errors make it hard to read.
