Writing Poetry Rubric
Used for grading poems written by students. Standard 6: Students read, write, and view texts to examine the choices artists make and to reflect on how their choices affect their audiences. Standard 1: Students use the writing process to produce clear responses to writing tasks that fulfill a variety of purposes and address a variety of audiences.

Meaning and Originality
Exceeding Standards (A)
Poem is creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into his/her words and uniquely conveyed his/her ideas and emotions.
Meeting Standards (B)
Poem is thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revisited, but the overall product is carefully written.
Approaching Standards (C)
Most of the poem is creative, but appears to be rushed. This is evident in the poet's redundancy or use of cliches.
Below Standards (D-F)
Poems appear to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive, and ideas are unoriginal.
Sensory Details
Exceeding Standards (A)
Vivid, detailed images and intensely felt emotion make the poem come alive.
Meeting Standards (B)
Clear sensory images are used to portray ideas or emotions.
Approaching Standards (C)
Some use of image, idea, or emotion
Below Standards (D-F)
Difficult to visualize image or emotion

Exceeding Standards (A)
The poem is complete and follows its intended form.
Meeting Standards (B)
The poem is written in its proper form with a few mistakes.
Approaching Standards (C)
The poem is somewhat written in its proper form.
Below Standards (D-F)
The poem is not written in its proper form.
Grammar
Exceeding Standards (A)
Proper use of English spelling and grammar is used consistently throughout the poem. Punctuation is utilized when necessary.
Meeting Standards (B)
A couple of spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem. Punctuation is utilized when necessary.
Approaching Standards (C)
The poet's intended meaning is confusing due to several spelling or grammar errors. Punctuation may be misused.
Below Standards (D-F)
There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poems difficult to understand. Punctuation is used incorrectly.
Poetic Devices
Exceeding Standards (A)
Poems demonstrate a clear understanding and noted use of a variety of poetic devices (including requirements).
Meeting Standards (B)
Poems demonstrate a fair understanding and use of a variety of poetic devices (including requirements).
Approaching Standards (C)
Poems use several poetic devices repetitively but do not demonstrate a broad understanding of their use in poetry. (Requirements may not have been met.)
Below Standards (D-F)
Poems show little evidence or understanding of use of poetic devices. (Requirements have not been met.)
