Magazine Layout-Final Project Graphic Design Magazine Layout-Final Project Graphic Design Develop a magazine article on a topic of your choice. Write at least a 1 page article using proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Once you have written the article, then using Photoshop and Illustrator, format the text and add graphics to create a pleasing 2 page (18x12") spread for a magazine. Students will tell the story of their topic both visually and with the written word. Final: Magazine Layout Develop a magazine article on a topic of your choice. Write at least a 1 page article using proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Once you have written the article, then using Photoshop and Illustrator, format the text and add graphics to create a pleasing 2 page (18x12") spread for a magazine. Students will tell the story of their topic both visually and with the written word.
	Below basic Demonstrates little or no evidence of meeting the requirements and goals of the assignment. Project should be resubmitted. 0 pts	Basic Has not met the requirements and goals of the assignment and need to make improvements. 5 pts	Proficient Met the requirements and goals of the project 8 pts	Advanced Exceeded the requirements and the goals of the project. 10 pts
Correct Dimensions 10 pts Project is 18 in by 12 in with resolution set at 150 dpi. Gutters are set at 3p0. Margins are at 1p6 left and right and 3p0 top and bottom. A minimum of 5 images are used.	Below basic Project is smaller than 18x12" and resolution is below 150 dpi. Fewer than 2 images are used in the project. No margins or gutters are used in document	Basic Project has correct width and/or height, but does not have the correct gutter and margins. Project has correct margins and gutters but uses an incorrect dpi. Fewer than 4 images are used	Proficient Project has correct height and width, gutters and margins and correct dpi. Project contains 5 images.	Advanced Project is sized correctly and has correct dpi. Project also contains a 1p6 bleed on all sides of the document. Project contains more than 5 images.
Color Correction 10 pts All images must be color corrected prior to compositing. Please save these individual images in a folder with layers showing. Each image must have at least a levels correction.	Below basic Project does not contain any color corrected images.	Basic Project contains color corrected images, however, layers are flattened, or images are saved in an improper format (.jpg, gif, etc.)	Proficient All images are color corrected effectively. Images contain one adjustment layer (Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, Black & White, etc.) and are saved in the proper file format to preserve layers.	Advanced All images are color corrected effectively using multiple adjustment layers and/or masks to target adjustments selectively.
Layer Masking 10 pts Project must contain a layer mask for 1 image.	Below basic Project does not contain an image separated from it's background using a layer mask.	Basic Project contains an image separated from it's background but does not contain a layer mask. Image is save in an improper format (.jpg or .gif) where layers are not found when file is opened	Proficient Project contains an image separated from it's background using a layer mask. File is saved in an appropriate format.	Advanced Project contains an image separated from it's background using a layer mask. Mask contains grey semi-transparent areas, use of a channel mask or additional effort to create a mask where the edges are seamless. Project contains multiple masked layers. File is saved in an appropriate format.
Filters 10 pts Project contains 1 filtered image.	Below basic Project does not contain an image that has been filtered.	Basic Project contains a filter, however, filter has been applied without "Convert to Smart Filter" being applied.	Proficient Project contains a filter properly applied using "Convert to Smart Filter". Filter adds artistry to the image.	Advanced Project uses multiple filters on an image to create a distinct and harmonious effect. Filter Masks and Blending Modes are used to blend filter effects with the original image.
Font Selection 10 pts Project contains type in an appropriate typeface, congruent with the tone of the images and the piece	Below basic Project does not contain text.	Basic Project includes text, but does include a change font from the default font. Comic Sans is used in project.	Proficient Basics of typography are applied, such as basic tracking, kerning and leading. Font selection has been performed and does not include the use the default font. Fonts are congruent and work effectively together	Advanced Typographic skills in tracking, kerning and leading are of superior merit. Student has selected font face based on the effect on the overall piece. Font selection reflects the theme of the piece. Fonts are exceptionally congruent and present a unified and harmonic flow of type.
Text Styling 10 pts Student shapes text using Type on a Path tool, Area Type tool, Clipping masks, etc.	Below basic Project does not contain stylized text.	Basic Project contains type styling, however, the styling does not add to the overall gestalt of the piece.	Proficient Project type styling is complex and adds a strong graphic element to the the piece.	Advanced Project type styling is complex, contains proper tracking, kerning and leading and adds a strong graphic element to the piece. Multiple text styling effects, such as warped text, text wrap and/or other text styling is used through out the piece.
Gestalt/Craftmanship 20 pts Student applies the 5 rules of gestalt (see handout).	Below basic Project does not contain elements which pertain to gestalt. The finished document does not communicate the article's theme, audience, organizational structure,and/or events and tells no story, either visually or verbally to the audience.	Basic Project contains 2 or 3 elements of gestalt. Elements do not combine to create a greater visual whole. The finished article communicates, with difficulty the article's theme, audience, organizational structure,and/or events and does not tell the visual story effectively.	Proficient Project contains 3-4 elements of gestalt, elements combine to create a basic sense of the piece's visual design is greater than the sum of it's parts. The finished article communicates clearly the article's theme, audience, organizational structure,and/or events and begins to tell the visual story effectively.	Advanced Project contains all 5 elements of gestalt and elements combine seamlessly to intensify the piece's visual design and elevate the design to a comprehensive and complete whole. The finished article communicates the the article's theme, audience, organizational structure,and/or events and tellc the visual story effectively, at an elevated level.
Authorship 10 pts Student presents an interesting and unique piece of writing, utilizing proper grammar, punctuation and capitalization.	Below basic Student presents a poorly written piece which does not hold the audience's attention.	Basic Project uses proper grammatical mechanics, however, does not have a clear theme, organizational structure or is difficult for the audience to understand.	Proficient Project incorporates good mechanics along with good storytelling. Article is interesting for the audience to read.	Advanced Project incorporates excellent mechanics along with excellent storytelling. Audience is engaged in reading the article.
Presentation 10 pts Student presents project to peers for review and critique.	Below basic Project is not presented to peers for critique. Student is disruptive or inattentive during other students' presentations.	Basic Project is presented to peers in an unplanned and unrehearsed manner. Student cannot explain how image was created, what tools were used, and problems overcome. Student is somewhat disruptive or inattentive during other students' presentations.	Proficient Project presentation is somewhat planned. Student can explain techniques in a basic manner and can explain what tools were used and how problems were overcome. Student is attentive during other students' presentations.	Advanced Project presentation is well organized and thought out. Student can explain techniques and tools to their peers, and has an excellent grasp on how problems were overcome. Student is attentive to other students' presentations and actively participates and adds comments to the discussion.
