Magazine Layout-Final Project Graphic Design 
Develop a magazine article on a topic of your choice. Write at least a 1 page article using proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Once you have written the article, then using Photoshop and Illustrator, format the text and add graphics to create a pleasing 2 page (18x12") spread for a magazine. Students will tell the story of their topic both visually and with the written word.

Correct Dimensions

Project is 18 in by 12 in with resolution set at 150 dpi. Gutters are set at 3p0. Margins are at 1p6 left and right and 3p0 top and bottom. A minimum of 5 images are used.

Layer Masking

Project uses multiple filters on an image to create a distinct and harmonious effect. Filter Masks and Blending Modes are used to blend filter effects with the original image.
Font Selection

Project type styling is complex and adds a strong graphic element to the the piece.

Project type styling is complex, contains proper tracking, kerning and leading and adds a strong graphic element to the piece. Multiple text styling effects, such as warped text, text wrap and/or other text styling is used through out the piece.
Gestalt/Craftmanship
20 pts

Student applies the 5 rules of gestalt (see handout).

Project does not contain elements which pertain to gestalt.

The finished document does not communicate the article's theme, audience, organizational structure,and/or events and tells no story, either visually or verbally to the audience.
Basic

Project contains 2 or 3 elements of gestalt. Elements do not combine to create a greater visual whole.

The finished article communicates, with difficulty the article's theme, audience, organizational structure,and/or events and does not tell the visual story effectively.
Proficient

Project contains 3-4 elements of gestalt, elements combine to create a basic sense of the piece's visual design is greater than the sum of it's parts.

The finished article communicates clearly the article's theme, audience, organizational structure,and/or events and begins to tell the visual story effectively.
Advanced

Project contains all 5 elements of gestalt and elements combine seamlessly to intensify the piece's visual design and elevate the design to a comprehensive and complete whole.

The finished article communicates the the article's theme, audience, organizational structure,and/or events and tellc the visual story effectively, at an elevated level.

Project presentation is somewhat planned. Student can explain techniques in a basic manner and can explain what tools were used and how problems were overcome.

Student is attentive during other students' presentations.
Advanced

Project presentation is well organized and thought out. Student can explain techniques and tools to their peers, and has an excellent grasp on how problems were overcome.

Student is attentive to other students' presentations and actively participates and adds comments to the discussion.
