Published Book Project Writing: Short Story The purpose of this assignment is to go through the steps of the writing process, including- brainstorming, creating a rough draft, revising/editing, and publishing a final draft. Each student will be given a bound book for publishing their final draft. They may choose to create a fiction story or to write a book on a theme of their choice. Organization/ Theme 30 %	Great The story is very well organized. The plot events are arranged in sequential order. The beginning, middle, and end are clearly developed. Theme is carried through consistently.	Good The story is pretty well organized. Most events occur in sequential order. Some aspects of beginning, middle, and/or end are not as developed as they could be. Theme is carried through on most pages.	Average The story is not well organized. Most events do not occur in sequential order. Many aspects of the beginning, middle, and/or end are missing. Theme is unclear or inconsistent.	Poor Story shows no evidence of pre-planning. Writing does not follow a theme.
Originality/Creativity 30 %	Great Writing shows evidence of student thinking and creativity. The story is new and original and well thought out.	Good Writing shows some evidence of student thinking and creativity. Most story events are new and original.	Average Writing shows little evidence of student thinking and creativity. Few story events are new and original. Wording is repetitive.	Poor Writing is obviously derived from another source. Less than 5 pages of the book are completed.
Handwriting and Grammar 15 %	Great There are no spelling and/or punctuation errors in the final draft of the student's story. Handwriting is very clear and neat.	Good There are one or two spelling and/or punctuation errors in the student's final draft of the story. Handwriting is mostly clear and neat.	Average The student's draft has more than three spelling and/or punctuation errors. Handwriting is sloppy and hard to read.	Poor Writing is difficult to read and understand. Contains several spelling and/or punctuation errors.
Illustrations 25 %	Great Illustrations are clear and colorful. They relate to and enhance the text.	Good Illustrations are present. They relate to the text.	Average Illustrations are lacking in detail and do not enhance the text.	Poor There are few or no illustrations.
