Historical Fiction Concepts
Excellent
My story includes accurate facts about my historical time period and they are interwoven into my scene. My facts are varied (i.e. I have facts from many different areas like foods, utensils, manners, etc.).
Good
The time period is mentioned in my story, but not interwoven. Story line doesn't flow very well and facts are clumped. On fact may be inaccurate. I use many of the same facts that are from the same categories, like food or utensils.
Fair
My story doesn't contain many facts or 2-3 are inaccurate. I only use one or two categories.
Poor
My story has few facts OR more than 4 facts are inaccurate. My use of research is very limited.
Word Choice
Excellent
The words used are striking and natural (e.g. “wondered” instead of “thought”). Powerful use of verbs and historically accurate words, phrases, and slang from the period.
Good
Has some fine word choices and generally good language. Some parts may be routine. Should try to use more expressive words.
Fair
The words used are acceptable but ordinary. Should try to use more expressive words.
Poor
Word choice is uninspired, colorless, and dull or sounds like author is trying too hard to impress. Some words may be used incorrectly.
Sentence Fluency
Excellent
Sentences are clear; they begin in different ways; some are longer than others; no fragments; paper is a delight to read out loud.
Good
Sentences are mostly well-constructed, some minor errors. The tavern scene marches along, but doesn’t dance.
Fair
Scene has a few problems with fragments or awkward sentences.
Poor
Sentences are often awkward or mechanical; little variety in length; may have many sentences that begin with the same word.
Figurative Language
Excellent
My use of figurative language was imaginative and the language used is something that would be historically accurate like in the example "making a sound like a muffled drum." I did not use the easiest type of figurative language, I went outside my comfort area and took a risk.
Good
I used figurative language, but it could have been more imaginative. It may have been routine. I could have taken more of a risk.
Fair
The figurative language used was acceptable, but ordinary. The wording is border line and probably would not have been used in that time period.
Poor
Figurative language is uninspired and unimpressive or the language I chose would not have been used in the time period. For example,
"it was as lame as..."
Conventions and Editing
Excellent
I made 1-2 grammatical or punctuation errors and/or 1 spelling error.
Good
I made some errors, perhaps by taking risks and using interesting words or sentences. There are 3-4 grammatical or punctuation errors and/or no more than 2 spelling errors.
Fair
There are 5-7 grammatical or punctuation errors and/or no more than 5 spelling errors.
Poor
There are more than 7 grammatical errors and/or more than 5 spelling errors.
