Capitalization
Level 1
Does not consistently remember to capitalize the first word of the sentence.
Level 2
Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word of the sentence.
Level 3
Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word of a sentence and inconsistently remembers to capitalize other words within the sentence when needed.
Level 4
Consistently remembers to capitalize the first word and any other words necessary within the sentence.
Punctuation
Level 1
Does not consistently put ending punctuation.
Level 2
Consistently puts ending punctuation in writing, but sometimes uses incorrect end mark.

Improper spacing between many words in the sentence and/or letters in the words make for difficult reading. Some of the words are above the writing line and somewhat difficult to read.
Level 3
Few spacing errors either between words or within words make for somewhat difficult reading. Word placement is on the line and easy to read.
Level 4
Good spacing is evident throughout the writing sample. All words are resting on the line and the entire sentence is legible and easy to read.
Grammar
Level 1
Missing a subject or verb. Incorrect word choice and word endings omitted.
Level 2
Sentence has both a subject and verb with but word choice is incorrect/word ending incorrect or omitted.
Level 3
Sentence has subject and verb agreement but contains 1 error in either word choice or word ending either incorrect or omitted.
Level 4
Words used in the sentence are correct all the time.
