Exceeds Standard

Student can accurately determine the cause of a specific event when asked a cause and effect question. Student is able to expertly integrate an explanation in their own words with specific evidence from the text.

Student is able to make concrete connections ONLY OR explains one side of the connection ONLY.
Approaching Standard

Student alludes to abstract (feelings, motivation) connections by incorporating examples from the text and personal experience. However, the response relies on the prompt for full understanding.
Mastered Standard

Student is able to CLEARLY explain abstract (feelings, motivation) personal connections to the text by incorporating examples from the text and personal experience. No prompt is needed to understand the response.
Exceeds Standard

Student is able to expertly explain MULTIPLE abstract connections to the text by incorporating examples from the text and personal expereince. No prompt is needed to understand the response.

Studdent idenifies 1 section of the text where they used a specific strategy, but it is not clear WHY that strategy was selected to enhance understanding.
Approaching Standard

Student is able to identify 2 sections of text where they used a specific and aprropriate strategy, but the explanation of why 1 or both strategies is used is not completely clear.
Mastered Standard

Student is able to identify 2 sections of the text where they used a specific and approrpiate strategy (different strategies are used) and CLEARLY explain why they chose that strategy to enhance their understanding of the text.
Exceeds Standard

Student is able to identify 2 or more sections of the text where they used a specific strategy (different strategies are used). The explanation of why they selected a certain strategy is explained clearly truly showing evidenec of metacognition.
