Exceeds Expectation

The student provides a thesis statement that is interesting and robust, and the student is able to craft an interesting sentence using a variety of techniques that are structurally sound.
Paragraph Structure

Below Expectation

The student lacks basic arrangement of a paragraph (topic sentences, too long (>10 sentences) or too short (<3 sentences), or missing a transitional statement.
Meets Expectation

The student understands the proper arrangement of a paragraph.
Exceeds Expectation

The student makes good use of topic sentences, defense or detail, and transition statements.
Spelling and Grammar

Below Expectation

The student fails to understand the appropriate use of capital letters, commas, semi-colons, and/or periods, and/or the student misspelled <10 words.
Meets Expectation

The student's work is grammatically correct, and/or the student spelled more than 10 words wrong.
Exceeds Expectation

The student uses a variety of grammatical devises to express ideas, and the student had less than three spelling errors.
Vocabluary

Below Expectation

Vocabulary used is too simple, inaccurate, or rudimentry.
Meets Expectation

Vocabulary reflects complexity of grade level.
Exceeds Expectation

Vocabulary relfects voice and style in a sophisticated and in an appropriate manner.
Conclusion

Below Expectation

There is no conclusion to the essay, or the attempted conclusion is inadequate.
Meets Expectation

The essay includes a conclusion that wraps up all major points.
Exceeds Expectation

The conclusion provides a comprehensive summation of the essay and provokes thinking in the reader.
