	Advanced 4 pts	Proficient 3 pts	Basic 2 pts	Below Basic 1 pts
Opening	Advanced Opening is interesting and caught the audience's attention.	Proficient Good opening. May not have caught all of the audience's attention.	Basic Speaker started with "Hi my name is", or "I am going to talk to you about", or a similar intro.	Below Basic No opening.
Persuasive Technique	Advanced Speaker used many varied reasons and details to support his or her opinion.	Proficient Speaker used many reasons to support his or her opinion.	Basic Speaker used some reasons to support his or her opinion, but could have been more persuasive.	Below Basic Not at all persuasive. The speaker failed to present relevant reasons to agree with his or her opinions.
Posture and Eye Contact	Advanced Excellent Posture. Speaker kept eye contact with the audience throughout the speech.	Proficient Speaker maintained good posture and eye contact most of the time.	Basic Posture OR eye contact needs improvement.	Below Basic Posture AND eye contact needs improvement
Emotion and Clarity	Advanced Speaker used emotion effectively and spoke clearly throughout.	Proficient Some emotion was conveyed and/or spoke clearly most of the time.	Basic Emotion was inconsistent, or lacking and/or the speaker spoke clearly most of the time.	Below Basic No emotion or inappropriate emotion and/or speaker did not speak clearly and could not be understood by members of the audience.
Pacing and volume	Advanced Speaker was confident and did not rush, stumble, or use phrases such as um, like, or uh. Volume was loud enough for the entire audience to hear.	Proficient Speaker was mostly confident. A few ums, uhs, and likes. Volume was sufficient.	Basic Speaker lacked confidence, quite a few uhs, ums, and likes, OR volume was not loud enough for the entire audience to hear.	Below Basic Speaker lacked confidence AND the volume was not loud enough for the entire audience to hear.
Timing	Advanced 2 minutes or more.	Proficient 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.	Basic 1 to 1 1/2 minutes.	Below Basic Less than one minute.
