Topic Sentence The paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that presents a single idea in a concise and clear way.	Level 1 No topic sentence.	Level 2 Topic sentence does not clearly introduce the main idea.	Level 3 Topic sentence introduces the main idea.	Level 4 Topic sentence introduces the main idea and makes the reader want to read on.
Supporting Details The body of the paragraph supports the topic sentence with meaningful details.	Level 1 Provides only 1 simple idea, with limited description.	Level 2 Provides 2-3 simple ideas, with some description.	Level 3 Provides 3 clear ideas, with appropriate description.	Level 4 Provides 3-4 complex ideas, with vivid description.
Concluding Sentence The paragraph ends with a sentence that restates the main idea.	Level 1 No concluding sentence.	Level 2 The paragraph has a closing sentence that is not related to the main idea.	Level 3 Concluding sentence restates the main idea.	Level 4 Powerful, creative, and interesting concluding sentence that restates the main idea.
