Exposing the True Me Clay Vessels - 8th Grade 
Students will choose to use a slab or coil hand building method to create a container using symbols and glazes to express their personality.

The student created textures and or symbols by scratching into the clay only.
Progressing to Grade level

The student scratched in most of the textures or symbols but did form one to two symbols with clay. No evidence of textures made using glazes.

The student made most of the symbols by forming them with clay with one or two symbols being scratched.

The student created all symbols with clay while incorporating textures by scratching into clay or by layering of glazes.
Craftsmanship

Edges, seams, attachments, and base show evidence of refinement/hand building method

The student showed no evidence of refining the form. Seams are not put together. Scratch marks are evident were a piece was scored. Clay pieces on base. Hand building method poorly done.
Progressing to Grade level

The student made some progress in cleaning up
trying to seal seams and clean up edges, but poorly done with pieces of clay stuck to the bottom. Hand building method needs much more practice.
Grade level

The student showed clear evidence of clean up of the base with sealing and smoothing seams and defining edges over most of the form. Shows good solid understanding of hand building method.
Grade Level with Excellence

The student totally cleaned the base, sealed seams, defined edges, and refined the shape with extreme excellence. Could teach others the hand building method.

The student created an air bubble which completely destroyed the whole form to a million pieces.
Progressing to Grade level

The student created an air bubble but the form survived in at least one or more larger pieces.

The student created a form with no air bubbles but some pieces may have fell off due to poor scoring.

The student created a form with no air bubbles and all scored pieces stayed on.

The student applied the glazes with missed areas being evident. Glaze is on the base.

The student applied the glazes with many less areas being obviously missed. Turn piece upside down and these areas can be scene.

The student applied the glazes properly over most of the form surface. Some layering of glazes to create textures.

The student applied the glazes properly with layering of glazes to create carefully thought out textured designs.
