Proficient
Horizon layers were mostly distinct and neat, with evidence of some creativity.

Horizon layers were unclear. Work is messy. No creativity shown.
Beginning
Student did not complete a soil horizon model.
Horizon/Layer Characteristics
Accomplished
All layers creatively illustrated with distinct and detailed characteristics of each horizon shown (i.e., clear distinct boundaries, gradual wavy boundaries, organisms that interact with each layer.
Proficient
Each layer illustrated some characteristics and features of each horizon.
Developing
Some layers illustrated the characteristics and featuers of each horizon.
Beginning
Student did not complete a soil horizon model.
Description of Soil Layers
Accomplished
All parts of the soil horizon were described accurately. Labeled with both layer names. (with both names ex: Horizon A is the topsoil) and describes organisms or material that appears in each layer. Description includes connecting information to how soil is formed (Climate, Biologic Interaction, Topography, Time, and Parent Material/Bedrock).
Proficient
All parts exist but information is incomplete or missing.
Developing
Some parts exist but have partial and/or inaccurate information.
Beginning
Student did not complete a soil horizon model.
Work Process/Effort
Accomplished
The model clearly shows understanding of the material and science concepts. Class time used wisely and project was taken home as needed to produce a high quality project. Content vocabulary, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation were correct.
