Civic engagement is "working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes." In addition, civic engagement encompasses actions wherein individuals participate in activities of personal and public concern that are both individually life enriching and socially beneficial to the community. Goal: To persuade the audience to action about a social subject.

Students are to choose a social issue and create a public service announcement. In the PSA students are to raise awareness for the issue by briefly describing the issue, providing relevant and accurate facts, and encouraging viewers to take positive action concerning the issue and finally provide resources for the audience.

Student will successfully demonstrate uncommon skills in the knowledge and implementation of social action.

Create a visual display for a current social justice issue. These displays must educate others about the chosen issue and detail possible courses of action that people should take as individual, communities, or nations that work to solve the issue you chose. Provide a 1-2 page justification along with your finished product that details why your chosen issue deserves attention.

Students create a self-selected project to portray key understanding of the novel, The Giver. Each project must go beyond the book itself and portray aspects of community, character, analysis, and understanding that are both creative and critical.

Students are to write a short story that demonstrates their understanding of the stages of plot and the characteristics of a short story.

Research the approved topic. Submit a typed essay, double spaced, 12 point font following APA guidelines. Include a references cited page with at least 3 resources used researching the paper. Paper will be graded on quality of research to support the topic, effective use of information gained through research, credibility of sources, content, grammar and mechanics, and references cited.

This is the rubric for the final draft of the Personal Narrative. Published stage.

The students will put together a poster to show during their oral presentation. The poster will contain information that the students collected regarding world religions The group presentation must be aligned with the poster.
