Students present a power point about an African American author during the Harlem Renaissance. Presentations should include: who the author is, what the author is famous for, how the author contributed to the Harlem Renaissance, a few interesting facts about the author, analysis of one selection written by the author, and an opinion of why we should study the author and his/her works.

Pre-drawings of: house, hand, face,chair. Students are then taught perceptional skills based on Betty Edwards Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain activities that give then knowledge in re-drawing the same subject matters using teachable skills. Students are to use these pre-assessments as a comparison tools after drawing instruction provided during this unit

Students will choose a specific topic to write a poem about. The students create a poem that contains 4 stanzas with 4 lines in each stanza. The poem should tell about a problem or hardship endured or currently enduring. The poem does not have to have a particular rhyme scheme; it may be free verse. The student will type their poem and paste it onto a piece of construction paper. The poem should include a symbol that represents the poem.

Using events portrayed in the movie and speeches, TSW write their own informative speech. These speeches should inform readers/listeners of problems encountered during the civil rights time period. Students may include racial inequality, violence vs. non-violence, adult and authoritative concern and /or excessive force used.

Students will write a poem using a piece of art provided by the teacher. The poem should include sensory details, literary devices, and imagery.

Students must write a madness monologue from the perspective of Ophelia. The monologue must revolve around the conversation between Hamlet and Ophelia, "Get Thee to a Nunnery".

Students must write a monologue and perform it from memory. The monologue must revolve around a picture of someone or it can be themselves.

You will create a self-paced writing portfolio that includes 35 selections out of 50. Your portfolio will include written elements (see below) and artistic components. For the artistic component, you will create a cover for your portfolio. You may make a collage for the front of your portfolio (I suggest using a small binder or folder). You may draw on the front, or you may in any other way express yourself artistically. You should also include artistic elements for each of your writing entries.

Sophia Academy Science Fair Research Paper Rubric - Middle School. Ms. Tomkins will use this rubric to to grade the research paper portion of your science fair project. Counts as a test grade.

The students will construct a speech responding to Virginia Woolf statement "A Woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." The student must have a claim of whether he/she agrees or disagrees. The student must have at least three sources, including work from Virginia Woolf. The speech should be more than five (5) minutes and should be no longer than ten (10) minutes. The speech will be typed.

Students will create an original script detailing the events of the play Hamlet.
