Introduction to Field-based Research

This assignment asks you to write a paper of 1000-1250 words about a moment in your life that defined an aspect of your identity. You will draw inspiration for this paper from a ‘snapshot’ or photo that reminds you of the day you became certain about that aspect of yourself or a time period when you explored a new characteristic or guiding value.

Each group will present a project based on their response to an issue that connects to food politics. You will be graded as a team and as individuals. Learning outcomes: --Develop skills in collaborative research --Define ways to apply their individual skills and thought process to the development of a culturally relevant solution --Define ways to create sustainable projects --Learn to present their work in a convincing and engaging manner as individuals and as a group

Students will be partnered with a gardener who will function as mentor. Students will interview and get to know this person in order to write a portrait of who they are and why they engage in community gardening. Stories and anecdotes people share about their hobbies and practices are extremely valuable to the understanding of larger food-based social movements of which we are a part.

This rubric will be used to grade both the multimodal project and the accompanying reflection paper.

The photographic food memoir is a first person story that uses pictures and narrative to tell about a moment in one's life in which the preparation, distribution and/or consumption (or not eating) of food played a central role. The food memoir relies on memory, personal experience and the senses to tell the story.
