Students will learn about subtractive versus additive sculptures. They will receive a plaster and vermiculite mixture in a small ziplock bag which they will shape and let dry overnight. After removing the hardened substance, they will look at it from all sides to decide what kind of subject they will make. Using a plastic knife, they will carve the block into either a realistic or abstract form that can be viewed from all sides and results in a unified sculpture.

2 rubric Giacometti Sculptures (Additive)       popup preview  
Students will learn about the style and works of Alberto Giacometti. They will compare and contrast Giacometti's works to that of August Rodin. After learning about additive sculpture, they will create a wire armature that shows some sort of human movent. The armature will be secured into a base with plaster of paris, then students will add both strip and clay mache to create their sculpture. Finally, the sculpture and will be painted, then augmented with a plaque that names the piece.

3 rubric Cloud Clay Progression       popup preview  
Students will display an understanding of either a lliteral or figurative subject, and will show transformation of the subject into an entirely different subject in 5 steps using cloud clay. Piece will be detailed, carefully painted, and glued to a painted background that enhances the overall design. Finally, students will translate their artwork into a diamante poem.
