Search Madame Bovary for motifs. “Trapped in a marriage and a life she hates, confined by the mores of her society and the limitations place on women, Emma desperately seeks escape.” The motif of “escape” is presented primarily throughout the novel by the use of three symbols: windows, carriages, and movement (walking, traveling, riding). Find examples of EACH of these elements and show how they symbolize her desire for escape.
