Shading Pencil Techniques
This is an assignment to teach the student the power of shading values, by drawing a still life. Shadows make parts of the artwork appear to go back. Highlights bring other parts toward us. A gradient is a subtle change from shadows to highlights. Gradients done right give the appearance of 3D forms, not just shapes.

Art - Exploring Line - Fall Still Life
After studying the handout on the element of line, students were asked to draw a fall still life, using contour lines to create the shapes of the gourds, corn and pumpkins, then they were to paint the still life in watercolor paint to complete the drawing. The point of the contour line was to enable the student to create the illusion of three dimensions. The success of the painting hinged on furthering that look with careful use of overlapping line, drawing the mat the objects were placed on drawing a horizon line to keep the objects from floating, using creativity in the background to create an interesting painting. The time allowed for this project was a week and two days, thus enabling every student to have a chance at success.

They will be provided a worksheet with all visual elements required to complete the exercise. They must be guided by design principles as they organize and design an original page layout. These collective exercises will then be hung on the wall where a group evaluation will be discussed. Each student will be asked to share their concerns as they worked to solve this visual problem.
