Authentic looking sugar skulls (calaveras) for Los Dias de Los Muertos were created. 2D designs were pushed to become 3D masks. Creativity in terms of how to transfer ideas into the 3D realm was needed in terms of problem solving in all construction phases. A gradient is a subtle change from shadows to highlights. Gradients done right give the appearance of 3D forms, not just shapes.

Studio art learned to perceive the world: shadows, edges (contours), spaces (positive and negative), and perceiving how parts of an objecct create the whole object. Pre-assessement drawings were done of a hand, face, house, and chair, that are challenging to draw for different reasons. These items challenge a different perception of the object drawn. At the end of the year students go back and re-draw their pre-assessment and reflect on what they learned.
