Introduction to Notan, the Japanese word for the concept between light and dark. Creating a black and white collage by cutting out positive space from the negative and using design elements on the negative and positive space . Organic and geometric shapes - asymmetrical and symmetrical designs - balance.

Create a newspaper collage of a prominent African American that played role in African American History. The collage should be mounted on white card stock paper. You will show the changing values in face of the person you chose for your collage using various shade of newspaper.

Student's had a an independent project based on another artist. Students had to create a composition that was able to emulate the style of any artist of their choice. Students will be graded on over all composition, connection with style of the artist of their choice, class spent in and out of the classroom, progress in their skill/design level, their critique and blog journal.
