This course develops Content Standards in the area of English/Language Arts. These are broad statements of what students will know and be able to do as a result of their training at the Alaska Military Youth Academy. In reading, students will use a variety of strategies to construct meaning from texts. They will: 1) decode/comprehend literal and inferred meanings; 2) summarize and connect information across themes/genres; 3) demonstrate an understanding of main ideas/supporting details; 4) analyze literary elements and devices 5) differentiate fact from opinion; 6)make personal connections to texts and the experiences of others. The Six Traits of effective writing will be emphasized: ideas, voice, organization, word choice, conventions, and fluency. Students will utilize the writing process: brainstroming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. They will develop the skills to write a five-paragraph essay.

This course encompasses: Number Operations, Number Sense, Measurement, Geometry, Data Analysis, Statistics, Probability and Algebra. Students will meet Alaska State Content Standards of Content and Performance Standards for Alaska Students (4th Edition, revised March 2006) Mathematics A, B, C, D and E pages 13&14.
