Torch Set-Up

Student checks cutting equipment but misses a step or adjusts valves/gauges incorrectly. Tries to light the torch with incorrect settings.

Student correctly checks equipment and insures valves and gauges are adjusted properly before attempting to light the torch.
Lighting Torch

Torch Shut-Down

Below Basic

Student incorrectly shuts down cutting equipment out of sequence or leaves a valve open.
Basic

Student shuts down equipment in correct sequence but fails to clear fuel/oxygen lines of all gas, does not clear regulators and back out regulator screws.
Proficient

Student shuts down equipment in correct sequence but fails to clear fuel/oxygen lines of all gas.
Advanced

Student correctly shuts down valves and clears all gauges and hoses of gas pressure. Equipment is then properly stored in shop.
3" cut on 1/4 steel

Below Basic

Student does not successfully make a cut
Basic

Student has a cut that does not completely go through the material the entire length of the cut
Proficient

Cut goes through is complete is ragged and not straight, a fair amount of dross is on the top and bottom

Cut is straight, little dross is the surface
