This rubric is created to asses in writing a short story project. The students will show their understanding about the characteristics of short story and they will choose the topic of their own short story freely.

Excellent

The introduction is engaging and encourages the reader to continue reading. This may be though the use of sensory details, dialogue or an unusual setting.
Good

The learner has attempted to engage the reader. Some aspects of the introduction are engaging but this is not sustained.
Fair

The introduction is mundane and does not entice the reader to continue reading.
Poor

No introduction has been provided.
Plot development and Conflict

Excellent

The plot is extremely engaging and original. The story contains a clear conflict or problem that needs to be resolved. The conflict is highly original and keep the readers' attention.
Good

The plot is somewhat engaging. The story contains a conflict or problem that needs to be resolved. it may be somewhat cliched or hackneyed.
Fair

The plot does not engage the reader. The learner has attempted to provide a conflict or problem but it tends to be vague . It may be mundane or cliched.
Poor

The story lacks a plot. It makes little sense to the reader There is no real conflict or problem within the story.
Characters

Excellent

Successfully goes in-depth with description; clearly covers all aspects of character (looks, traits, actions.). The characters are multidimensional and believable.
Good

Goes in-depth with description; covers most aspects of character (looks, traits, actions.)
Fair

Includes some description; covers some aspects of character (looks, traits, actions.) RPC does not fit well into the story and clearly was added without thought.
Poor

Does not go in-depth with description; does not cover all aspects of character (looks, traits, actions.)
RPC does not fit with story at all.
Structure

Excellent

The story is extremely well structured. There is a clear beginning, middle and end. Paragraphs are used effectively.
Good

There is a sequence of events Story attempts a beginning, middle, and end, and paragraphs are used.
Fair

The sequence of events is confusing. Story has some sense of a beginning, middle, and/or end but the use of paragraphs is incorrect or absent.
Poor

There is no logical order to the story. Story has no beginning, middle, and/or end. Paragraphs have not been used.
Vocabulary

Excellent

Vocabulary is sophisticated, varied and interesting. Precise and careful words choice has been made.
Good

Vocabulary is good. The learner has tried to use interesting and varied vocabulary.
Fair

The vocabulary tends to be mundane.
Poor

The vocabulary is very simplistic.
